The National Football League (NFL) has agreed to a class action settlement with retired players who sued the league. In the lawsuit, players accused the NFL of not only failing to warn players of the brain injuries associated with playing football. It also accused the NFL of actually hiding the dangers of brain injuries associated with repeated concussions so that they could return players to the field.
This settlement provides monetary compensation for the following diagnoses:
- Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or ALS
- Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy diagnosed after death
Monetary compensation is not provided for depression, mood disorders or future cases of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE.
Under the class action settlement, covered retired players can receive baseline medical exams to diagnose brain injuries. conduct testing, and provide treatment. Retired players must have played football with one of the following:
- World League of American Football
- NFL Europe League
- NFL Europa League
In some cases, immediate family members of retired players and legal representatives of incapacitated or deceased players may also be covered by the class action settlement.

In order for you to receive the benefits of the class action settlement, you must register and comply with the registration terms by August 7, 2017. The 65-year settlement program covers players who retired from the league by Jan. 7, 2014. If you fall within the covered time period, you should register as soon as possible.
